How to Search Cases by Name
Utah Courts Xchange Help spells out the official search controls. Begin with an exact last name and first name. An asterisk wildcard widens a name. A broad query invites false matches and a billable search, though. Before opening any result, tighten the San Juan County case lookup by jurisdiction, court, case type, or date. Narrow by date first when results run long.
- Choose District Court, Justice Court, or both based on the matter.
- Enter the exact last name or company name, then the first name when known.
- Select San Juan County or the specific Monticello, county, or Blanding court.
- Add a case type or filing, disposition, judgment, or satisfaction date range.
- Run the narrow query and verify the location, type, number, and filing date.
- Open the case number to read the chronological history.

Xchange Powers San Juan Lookup
Utah Courts runs a paid service called Xchange. It is a statewide repository of public district and justice court records entered into CORIS. New case activity shows up once court staff key it in. So a docket search may lag the courtroom by a day or more. Coverage can include San Juan County District Court. It also reaches San Juan County Justice Court, Monticello City Justice Court, and Blanding Justice Court. You still pick the right court yourself when you look up a case number.
For details on subscriptions and what the service includes, see the official Xchange overview from Utah Courts. It explains account setup and fees for docket access.

That overview separates public case history from private categories and document retrieval. It is a finding tool. It does not prove every filing is public, nor that an online printout is certified.
How to Search by Case Number
Type the complete identifier exactly as the court issued it. Keep any leading zeroes, such as [court-issued case number]. San Juan County follows no single published numbering pattern, so no sample format applies. Keep the court name beside every San Juan County result. A number alone is incomplete. Utah case numbers and citation numbers are not necessarily unique statewide. Pair each with its county and court.
A citation number is a separate field. Xchange gives it separate controls plus a citation-location filter. Numbers from Blanding may be cross-checked through the city's payment route for eligible payment data. Xchange supplies the broader public case history. When the court is unknown, search district and justice jurisdiction both. Then validate the result row before opening it.
San Juan Search Codes
Case type codes narrow the result set in a hurry. They classify the court record without saying what the judge decided. Codes can change, so consult the live Xchange case-code list.
- FS
- State felony, normally searched in District Court.
- MD
- Misdemeanor DUI.
- MO
- Other misdemeanor.
- TN or TC
- Traffic citation or traffic court case.
- PN or PC
- Parking citation or parking court case.
- ST
- Small-claims trial de novo in District Court.
Read each code beside its jurisdiction, location, case number, and filing date. A Blanding traffic code is not interchangeable with a district felony record in Monticello.
What a Case Search Shows
Treat the first result row as an identity check. It may show county, court location, case type, case number, filing date, and party fields. Criminal results sometimes add a birth-date field. Skip the addresses, birth dates, and personal details that do not matter. Open the case only once the public fields match the one you want.
| County | Confirms San Juan County as the geographic result. |
|---|---|
| Court Location | Distinguishes district, county justice, Monticello, and Blanding records. |
| Case Type | A code interpreted through the current official table. |
| Case Number | The link to expanded history, not a document download. |
| Filing Date | The date the case was filed, which may differ from the event date. |
| Proceedings | Chronological settings, motions, minutes, and other events. |
| Documents | PDF links when electronic and publicly available, billed separately. |
The history can go further, listing judges, attorneys, charges, pleas, dispositions, judgments, account entries, and satisfaction activity. Every entry means only so much. A charge is not a conviction, and a scheduled proceeding is not an outcome.
Read San Juan Results First
A common surname brings back several people and courts. Compare county, court location, case type, number, and filing date before opening anything. That habit keeps a justice citation from blending into a district matter, or a San Juan County result from one out of another Utah county. The official Xchange search-control image illustrates the workflow.

The blank controls show how scope and identifiers work together. Xchange demands a narrower search once more than 500 results match. That ceiling proves nothing about a missing case.
County vs Statewide Case Search
No separate San Juan County portal replaces Xchange for full case history. The statewide system is the public case-search layer here. Local justice pages handle contact, citation, form, and payment needs. Secure payment routes do too. For classification, corrections, copies, and certification, the clerk stays the official recordkeeper.
| Channel | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Xchange | Statewide district and justice case history | Paid; restricted cases excluded |
| Utah Court Calendars | Current public hearing setting | Not the full history |
| Local payment route | Eligible citation or case payment | Not full Xchange |
| Court clerk | Missing data, copies, certification | Cannot give legal advice |
| MyCourtCase | A party’s own documents and eDocuments | Not anonymous public research |
Phone routing is simple. San Juan district calls go to 435-587-2122, county or Monticello justice to 435-587-2544, and Blanding Justice Court to 435-678-2334 extension 3. A courthouse public terminal may offer Xchange access, and a written court-record request can seek a copy when online data falls short.
MyCourtCase Has a Different Role
MyCourtCase exists for parties and authorized users, not the general public. Identity verification takes an email, a case number, and government-issued identification. Once verified, a user can link an eligible case. That user can view personal case documents, pay, receive notices, or file an eligible eDocument. It is not the statewide public search for researching any public San Juan County case.
This boundary protects the line between public case information and a participant's authorized documents. Use Xchange for public lookup; reserve MyCourtCase for your own eligible matter. A case type may be unavailable there. Follow the court's stated clerk or filing route. Do not treat the gap as proof that no case exists.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
An ordinary Xchange search will not surface everything. Sealed and expunged cases stay out of the results. So do juvenile delinquency, child welfare, and termination of parental rights. Certain private civil or family categories are hidden as well. Utah sorts court records into several classes: public, private, controlled, protected, safeguarded, sealed, and juvenile. Even a public case history can hold documents filed under a private label.
When a San Juan County case number does not appear, the reasons vary. The court or the spelling may be wrong. The entry may be too new to post. The classification may be private or restricted, the case may be expunged or juvenile, or the justice history before CORIS may simply be thin. Ask the right clerk which request route fits your situation. An authorized requester can file the written information and identification that UCJA Rule 4-202.04 requires. Staff will not read restricted contents over the phone.
Absence is not proof. No Xchange result does not establish that a San Juan County case never existed or that it is sealed.
Xchange Printouts Are Not Certified
A case-history screen works well as a chronological index. It is not a certified copy. It is not the full file, a transcript, or the text of every order. For formal proof, contact the San Juan County District Court clerk. The justice-court clerk may hold the original record instead. Ask that office for the right copy product.
Fees apply. Official Xchange materials list a document charge of $1 for a public electronic PDF. The published search rates conflict: the fee page says $0.35, while the live registration screen shows $0.20. Confirm the current price before you run a paid query. The guest registration screen shows the terms and pricing a public searcher signs up under.

The account screen also makes clear that public searching may cost money. A free courthouse terminal is the better bet if one is available, and the clerk can explain inspection and the correct copy product.
